Types & Uses of Milling Cutter Ⅰ

Milling cutter is a rotary cutter with one or more cutter teeth. During operation, each tooth cuts off the allowance of the workpiece in turn. Milling cutter is mainly used to process plane, step, groove, forming surface and cutting workpiece on milling machine. Because of the widely working range of milling machine, milling cutters are also divided into different types.

 

In order to understand milling cutter, we should first know the structure of it. The structure of milling cutter is divided into four types. The first type is integral type: the body and teeth are integrated. The other one is integral welded tooth type: the tooth is made of cemented carbide or other wear-resistant cutter material and brazed on the cutter body. The third one is teeth inserting type: the teeth are fastened on the cutter body by mechanical clamping. The last one is indexable type: this structure has been widely used in face milling cutter, end milling cutter and three face edge milling cutter.

 

1. Milling cutters are generally divided to the following types:

1) Flat end milling cutter: carry out rough milling, remove a large number of blanks and finish milling of small area horizontal plane or contour.

2) Ball end milling cutter: for surface semi finish milling and finish milling, small knife can finish milling the small chamfer of steep surface and straight wall.

3) Flat end milling cutter with chamfer: rough milling can be used to remove a large number of blanks, and fine milling can also be used to smooth the small chamfer on the front.

4) Forming milling cutter: including chamfering cutter, T-type milling cutter or drum cutter, tooth cutter and internal R cutter.

5) Chamfering cutter: the shape of the chamfering cutter is same as that of chamfer, which is divided into milling cutter for circular chamfering and milling cutter for oblique chamfering.

6) T type slotting cutter: milling T groove.

7) Tooth cutter: milling out various tooth patterns, such as gears.

8) Rough leather cutter: can be processed quickly on cutting aluminum copper alloy.
