What are the Differences Between Milling Cutters and Drill Bits?

Milling cutters are used in many machining processes because they contain one or more cutter teeth, which greatly improve the efficiency of work-piece processing. Today we will discuss the knowledge of the characteristics of milling cutters, and the differences between milling cutters and drill bits.

What are the characteristics of milling cutter?

1. Each tooth of the milling cutter periodically participates in intermittent cutting.

2. The cutting thickness of each tooth varies during the cutting process.

3. Feed per tooth α F (mm / tooth), indicating the relative displacement of the work-piece within each time the milling cutter rotates a tooth.

What are the differences between milling cutter and drill bit?

1. Different uses

Milling cutters are mainly used for machining planes, steps, grooves, formed surfaces and cutting work-pieces on milling machines. Drill bit is one of the important tools for oil drilling, which is generally used for drilling holes.

2. Different categories

Milling cutter is generally divided into sharp tooth milling cutter and shovel tooth milling cutter. Bits are divided into diamond bits, rock bits and scraper bits.

3. Different rear corners

Milling cutter: the side edge of the milling cutter has a back angle, so it can cut laterally.

Drill bit: the side edge of the drill bit has no back angle, so it cannot be cut laterally, which is used for axial drilling.

Can milling cutter be used as drill bit?

What if there is no drill in some special cases? If you have a general single edge and over center double or three edge milling cutter, you can also use it as a drill bit.
