Material Category and Selection Criteria of Drill Bit

Selection criteria of bit material:

Drilling operation is essentially a kind of cutting process. The prerequisite to complete the cutting process is that the hardness of the tool material must be higher than that of the processed material.

Material category of drill bit:

The material of drill bit is generally divided into HSS, HSS containing cobalt, powder HSS and tungsten steel. The hardness of the above drill bit materials increases step by step. Under normal circumstances, it depends on whether the drill bit can drill the work-piece or wear resistance. The hardness of the drill bit and the hardness of the work-piece can be transformed into HV Wechsler hardness. If the hardness of the drill bit is more than three times that of the work-piece, of course, the surface hardness of the drill bit is greater than that of the work-piece. The higher the surface hardness, the better, and the longer the service life of the drill bit

Bit material selection:

Drill holes on wood materials and use woodworking drill bits together. Woodworking drill bits have large cutting volume and low requirements for tool hardness. The tool material is generally general tungsten steel.

Drill holes in general metal materials (alloy steel, non-alloy steel, cast iron, cast-steel, non-ferrous metal) and use metalworking bits. The material of the bits is generally high-speed steel (high-grade tools contain element cobalt HSS CO).

When drilling holes in concrete materials and stone materials, the impact drill bit is used together with the masonry bit. The material of the cutter head is generally cemented carbide.

Ceramic tile drill bits are used for drilling on ceramic tiles and glass with higher hardness. The tool material is tungsten carbon alloy. Due to the high hardness and poor toughness of the tool, attention should be paid to the use of low speed and no impact.

Drill bit is a tool used to drill through holes or blind holes in solid materials and ream existing holes. The commonly used drill bits mainly include twist drill bit, flat drill bit, center drill bit, deep hole drill bit and nesting drill bit. Although reamers and spot facers cannot drill on solid materials, they are also traditionally classified as drills.
